Mp3 BMW noutati

Recommended Posts

MP3 music files are the digital trend of the future in the audio sector. And while, until recently, they were mainly popular with kids and young adults, modern MP3 players are beginning to have an impact in the automotive world. BMW is the first manufacturer in the world to offer a so-called iPod Interface. It has been available in the US since the middle of 2004, and in Europe since 2005, and allows for the connection of an Apple iPod to a BMW’s audio system – with iPod operation via the multifunction steering wheel. Additional means of listening to MP3 format files in BMW vehicles include the connection of an MP3 player via an AUX IN interface and MP3-enabled CD drives. This eNewsletter is all about current MP3 technology at BMW.

MP3 player: barely larger than a mobile phone, this device can store and play up to 15.000 songs. Whether you are at home, out for a run or driving in your car: MP3 equals music on the move

They are the successors of the Walkman, gradually replacing CD players: small, portable MP3 players. What is MP3 all about? MP3 is an acronym for MPEG-1 (or MPEG-2) Layer 3 audio encoding. Thanks to a tight compression algorithm, this file format enables extremely space-saving storage of music and audio files on chips, memory cards, hard drives and CDs. Today’s most popular storage media are CDs and MP3 players:

 CD: An MP3 file can be burnt onto an audio CD on any modern computer. The special compression algorithm allows users to store up to 10 times more songs than with more traditional audio formats. In order to play an MP3 CD, the CD player needs to have the ability to recognise and play MP3 files.

 MP3 player: As opposed to a CD player, the MP3 player is a combined storage medium and audio player. Like a Walkman, MP3 players can be used with headphones, or in connection with the home stereo or the car’s stereo system.

A digital representation of a music file: Depending on the compression mode, MP3 music files sound just as good as standard music CDs.

From Abba to Zappa: an MP3 player packs up to 875 hours of music

Among the big advantages of MP3 players are their low weight, handy size and extremely large storage capacity. There is now a vast range of all kinds of MP3 players available. Among those, the Apple iPod is still considered by experts to be the leading, trend-setting model. Depending on the version, it boasts storage capacities between 4 and 60 GB. The storage capacity of the 60 GB model is thus equivalent to about 100 regular CDs – at a size roughly equal to that of a small mobile phone. This translates into 15,000 songs or 875 hours of non-stop entertainment in the form of audio books, radio dramas or other content – coupled with excellent audio quality. Hence, it comes as no surprise that the Apple iPod is rapidly gaining new aficionados around the world, and has already gained iconic status in the world of modern audio entertainment.

The Apple iPod, for which BMW now offers an interface option. This enables connection of the MP3 player to the audio system via an adapter in the glove compartment. The iPod can then be operated using the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel.

One CD can store ten times as much music with the audio data saved in the MP3 compression format.

The AUX IN interface comes as standard in the BMW 1 Series and the new BMW 3 Series and enables drivers to connect their MP3 players straight to the car stereo system. MP3 options for BMW drivers: a short overview

There are basically three ways of playing MP3 format files in BMW vehicles:

 iPod interface (optional) – The iPod interface enables connection of an Apple iPod to the car’s audio system. This interface is available as an option for various models (details see appendix). It is integrated into the vehicle and can be operated via the car stereo controls or the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel. The songs playing on the iPod can be listened to on the car stereo system, while at the same time, the iPod is charged through the car’s electrical network. The iPod (the device itself is not included) is connected via an easy-to-use adapter cable in the glove compartment. This optional interface is not just available for new cars, but also for older, discontinued models.

BMW was the first manufacturer in the world to offer an integrated solution for the iPod MP3 player. The iPod interface has been available since the middle of 2004 in the US and since the beginning of this year in Europe.

 Auxiliary interface (standard or optional) – This is the “lesser”, not fully integrated MP3 solution aimed at owners of MP3 players other than the iPod. Drivers can connect their MP3 player to the car stereo system through a so-called AUX IN interface. This option differs from the iPod interface in that the driver operates the MP3 player by using the controls on the device itself, which is connected via a cable to an AUX IN socket in the glove compartment. The MP3 player will not be charged during playback. This AUX IN socket comes as standard in the BMW 1 Series and the new BMW 3 Series and is available as an optional extra for many other models (details see appendix).

 MP3-enabled CD drives – Drivers who do not yet own an MP3 player can still listen to MP3 music files on their BMW audio system. All they need is an MP3-enabled CD drive. This enables the playback of regular CDs containing music in MP3 format, which means that users can store more than 10 times the amount of music on them compared to conventional audio CDs (overview see appendix).

Our competitors’ MP3 options

So far, our core competitors are offering only a limited range of MP3-compatible options. Mercedes-Benz is the only one among them to have announced the introduction of iPod interface kits for the new B-Class and the M-Class. Other than that, and in contrast to BMW’s approach, Mercedes-Benz does not currently offer MP3 options for its other model ranges or for discontinued models. It should be noted, though, that competitors like Alfa-Romeo, Audi, Nissan or Volvo are busy working on fully integrated solutions similar to the ones already available at BMW.

The new BMW 3 Series: most of its CD drives are already MP3-enabled.

 MP3 is the file format of the future for storing digital music. Its main advantage is its extremely powerful data compression which – depending on the MP3 player used – enables the continuous playback of more than 800 hours of audio entertainment.

 BMW is already offering a wide range of in-car MP3 options:

 iPod interface

 Auxiliary interface (AUX IN connection)

 MP3-enabled CD drives

 BMW is the first car manufacturer in the world to have offered an integrated iPod interface as early as 2004.

 BMW is the industry leader when it comes to integrating MP3 audio into the driving experience.
